Oxford house

My name is James, and I am Ivey Haupert’s boyfriend. I have watched Ivey’s life change in so many positive ways since she moved into Oxford House Edgehill in Richmond, Virginia. I have seen her become more responsible, independent, and committed to her recovery. Oxford House has given her a safe and supportive environment surrounded by people who understand what she is working toward and who hold each other accountable.

One of the biggest things I have seen is how the self-governing structure has helped Ivey grow. She has learned how to take responsibility, communicate with her housemates, handle responsibilities within the home, work through disagreements, and be accountable to other people in recovery. She has also been able to maintain full-time employment and continue working toward her goals and building a stable future. As her boyfriend, I have personally seen her become stronger and more confident, and I believe Oxford House has played a major role in that progress.

I support rules that protect residents and keep people safe, but rules that require staff or treat every recovery home like a commercial business could prevent Oxford Houses from operating the way they are designed to. The self-governing and self-supporting model is a major part of what makes Oxford House work. Please consider changing rules that do not fit the Oxford House model and clarify whether the house members themselves are considered the operator. I have personally seen the positive impact Oxford House has had on Ivey’s life, and I hope that opportunity remains available to others in recovery.
