Oxford House

Having a background in working for non-profit organizations, including local Community Service Boards and inside of many of our local jails for last 31 years, I can tell you that there is no hope for our people in recovery without stable housing that is affordable. There is still a shortage in housing even with the countless number of Oxford Houses available in our area. How can we expect people to become law abiding citizens and improve our communities by helping people get into recovery if we continue to feed them addictive medications and provide no safe affordable options for housing. Many of the treatment centers in our area rely on and provide help with Oxford rent for our folks leaving treatment. If we tell them to change people, places and things and then send them back to the same environment that kept them addicted we are contradicting everything that we ask them to do. Adding more recovery housing would be more beneficial instead of getting rid of a proven model that works. What we know is if someone is wanting to stay sober and they are living in an Oxford House, they will keep the others accountable and the countless number of people that have come through that model that are still sober today and changing lives of others are here to prove it. Children have regained their parents; families have been brought together with the help of Oxford and that is undeniable.  The homeless population would increase 5 times if this model is changed proven by the number of people currently living in Oxford, interviewed by Oxford Housing and by those hoping there will be a spot for them when they are need in the future. Before making a decision that will negatively and immediately impact every community, every treatment center and all of the lives Oxford has saved there needs to be another solution that will immediately fix this problem because as for now the need and demand is increasing by the minute with very few options as it is. There are families struggling to keep housing that do not have these challenges due to the current prices why would we get rid of the model that is most affordable and expect things to get better. Having staffed housing would be a great addition to the housing need for those that need more accountability but for those that simply need the option to live somewhere while they get their feet on the ground the Oxford Model is perfect and welcome staff from any facility to drop in anytime and we do. Thank you for the opportunity to have a voice in this matter.
