Jacy Thomas (Thomas II Oxford House)
Certified Recovery Residences
What Oxford House has done for
me…
I have only lived in an Oxford House for a few months, but I have known about it and seen it’s
impact for many years now. I first heard of the Oxford House from a friend and co-worker I
originally met at an AA meeting. He is a recovering drug addict and has always the most
admirable and inspiring sobriety I have ever known. He has been paramount in my own
recovery and is currently my sponser. If you asked him today how he did it, he would give the
Oxford House as one of his biggest tools early on.
So I have always been aware of the Oxford house and known it as a powerful option on the aid
of recovery. My sobriety did not last the way my sponsor’s did, and I have been in and out over
the years since. While I struggled with my addiction, in addition to the rooms of anonymous
meetings, the Oxford house has always been a beacon of hope in the back of my mind.
So when the time came that I decided I really wanted to get serious about recovery, it just so
happened that I was freshly getting out of jail and my family was moving away. At first that
combination seemed like a dreadful circumstance that would set me back. However that
beacon in my mind started flashing and I decided I would try to get into an Oxford house.
Thankfully things worked out for me, just fell in line like a higher power guiding me in the right
direction, and today I call an Oxford House my home.
Oxford house has not only given me a place to live, it’s given me a group of guys that give me
peer support and accountability. Oxford house has given me a chance at a better life, one that I
spent many days believing I could never have. Oxford house has given me hope at times I
thought life was hopeless. Oxford house has given me opportunities to give my life some
meaning. Oxford house has given me a sturdy block to use building the foundation of a better
life. Oxford house has given me confidence and happiness I’ve not known for a long time.
I believe Oxford house has saved thousands of lives. Honestly, without Oxford house, I would
most likely be homeless and strung out right now. I likely would have given up l as I had so
many times before.
The Oxford house has given me much, and asked little. But it did ask me to share my
experience here with you, and I’m happy to do so. My name is Jacy, and Oxford house has
given me the chance to be who I am today, and for that I am grateful.
Jacy D.T.
