The Future of Oxford Houses Being Jeopardized

The new rules proposed by the DBHDS endanger the recovery of many addicts including myself who are benefiting from the environment of a democratically run Oxford house. I am not opposed to government oversight of Oxford Houses but the proposed rules assume that all Oxford houses are run commercially with paid staff. The introduction of staff into Oxford houses would feel like a step back as it reinforces the belief that addicts are incapable of living without the oversight of caretakers. I am proud of the Oxford house that I live in and those I share the space with. I have been through multiple treatment programs that involved living with staff or caretakers and although I can recognize the need for such measures when I was in an early stage of my recovery I now feel that my ability to live alongside other addicts without a 3rd parties oversight is a source of strength. Please consider revising these rules so as not to inhibit the recovery of those who have found success living in democratically run Oxford houses. I appreciate whomever takes the time to read this statement and hope that you take my words into consideration.
