The Virginia Dental Board is absolutely responsible for the scaling assistants education, monitoring, and reporting. The insurance and patient health implications aside, the Board (as promised and publicly stated in moving the legislation forward) shall create standards of rules and regulations for these assistants. That the dentists over seeing this process shall be responsible for harm, also needs to be indicated in rules and regulations, along with the consequences of a dentists failure to monitor, evaluate the health of the patient, and reporting. Licensed dental hygienists will be on stand by to help in the patient recovery and re-introduction to a healthy oral state, after supervised neglect is reported. The dentist and the dental hygienist have two very different goals, one is restorative and the other is preventative. Allowing a professional that financially benefits from the failing health and failure of preventative services provided by people they over see, is fully unethical.
