Call for Gear Reform in VA Menhaden Fishery

We need to put a stop to the bycatch of predatory species while purse-seine nets are used to capture menhaden. In open water, these nets are efficient at achieving their purpose, as non-target species are able to escape. However, when used in water less than 60’ deep, these non-targeted species are not able to get out the bottom of the net and are instead needlessly killed as bycatch. This can have severe impacts on our sport fish, as they take years to reach sexual maturity and breeding size. We need tighter regulation of these purse-seine methods and operations so that our sport fish can continue to grow and thrive. The balance of the ecosystem is at stake.
