Shortly after relocating to Virginia 8 years ago, I learned that my youngest son had been diagnosed with ASD. Thus began our long and arduous road of locating caregivers as well as appropriate educational staff to help our son grow and develop. Still, 8 years later the struggle to find an appropriate caregiver outside of the home continues, and has become even more difficult since the pandemic. Now we must locate someone outside of the home that is not family, to be entrusted with financially and private, personal information about everyone in our small family. How this is supposed to help us is beyond me, and this ideology of mundane checks and balances is outdated.
