Adoption

Sir or Ms,

The promise of equality before the law has been an empty promise for hundreds of thousands of Virginia gay and lesbian citizens for much too long. Proposals to prohibit or limit the ability of gay and lesbian couples to adopt children are motivated by animus and fear, neither of which should have any impact on laws.

Federal and many state courts are finally recognizing that virtually all anti-gay legislation comes about from animus, bigotry, and fear.

The Religious Freedom Act that Thomas Jefferson authored prohibited government from legislating based on religious tenants. Government officials have a duty to stand against those who would eliminate those freedoms.

There should be one principle in adoption: Recognize what is in the best interests of the child and make it possible for the child to thrive in that environment. If that is a fundamental principle and animus is ignored, then gay couples will be on an equal footing.

Please do not discriminate against gay couples who wish only to give love and support to unwanted children.
