Supervision of unlicensed staff

“Supervision of unlicensed staff shall occur at least weekly by the licensed supervisor. As documented in the youth’s medical record, supervision shall include a review of progress notes and data and dialogue with supervised staff about the youth’s progress and effectiveness of the ISP. Supervision shall be documented by, at a minimum, the contemporaneously dated signature of the licensed supervisor.”

In the therapy model as outlined by CASP, unlicensed staff are provided with supervision as part of client case supervision. During case supervision, dialogue occurs regarding the client’s progress and data is reviewed to make treatment modifications and protocol changes. Each provider documents this encounter, and that documentation is part of the medical record for the client.  Consideration should be given to update this requirement to include that weekly supervision of the unlicensed staff would only need to occur if not occurring as part of regularly scheduled client case supervision.
