| Purpose of the meeting The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will host the sixth TMDL Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting for the Sand Branch Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Study on Tuesday January 31, 2023. The TAC meeting is open to the public and any member of the public may participate in the proceedings. Meeting participants will assist in development of a cleanup study, also known as Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), to address benthic impairments of Sand Branch in Fairfax and Loudoun counties which has been listed on Virginia’s § 303(d) list of impaired waters for failing to meet Virginia’s water quality standards due to poor health in the benthic biological communities. TMDLs will be developed for sediment, total dissolved solids, and total phosphorus, which were identified as probable contributors to the poor health of the stream segment. The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and its contractors, Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc., will discuss and solicit feedback on the on-going development of three TMDLs, changes within the watershed, results of the AllForX for total phosphorus and sediment, and the proposed project timeline.
