Purpose of the meeting This is the fifth meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for the Sand Branch Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Study. Biological monitoring data collected by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) have shown that Sand Branch, located in Loudoun and Fairfax Counties, does not meet Virginia’s water quality standard for aquatic life use due to poor health in the benthic biological communities. These streams are listed on the 303(d) TMDL Priority List and Report as impaired due to violations of the State’s water quality standards for the General Standard (Benthics). Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act and §62.1-44.19:7.C of the State Water Control Law require the DEQ to develop clean-up studies (TMDLs) for pollutants responsible for each impaired water contained in Virginia’s 303(d) TMDL Priority List and Report. TMDLs will be developed for sediment, total dissolved solids and total phosphorus, which were identified by the benthic stressor analysis as probable stressors contributing to the poor health of the benthic community. The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and its contractors, Wetland Studies and Solutions Inc. will discuss the data and process used to develop TMDL goals for the impaired watershed and identify sources of pollution in the watershed. We will solicit feedback on the on-going development of three TMDLs, specifically to share the pollutant source assessment, the TMDL end point for total dissolved solids, and the method for developing TMDL endpoints for sediment and phosphorus. This meeting is an opportunity for local residents to learn about the condition of these streams, share information about the area, and become involved in the process of local water quality improvement. | |
