Medical Society of Virginia Comments on Virginia Medical Scholarship Program (12 VAC 5-530)

The Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) appreciates the opportunity to provide comments in response to the Notice of Periodic Review of regulations governing the Virginia Medical Scholarship Program (12 VAC 5-530) on behalf of our nearly 11,000 members. The Medical Society of Virginia represents physician, medical student and physician assistant members and aims to make Virginia the best place to practice and receive medical care.

MSV supports the Virginia Medical Scholarship Program and its goal of increasing the number of physicians practicing in the Commonwealth. However, the program has not been funded for several years and the focus on financial assistance has shifted to other programs, primarily the Loan Repayment Program.  MSV supports increasing all mechanisms that reduce medical student debt and supports the appropriate funding for this program.

MSV proposes amending 12 VAC 5-530 to update the language to include “high need specialties especially those in underserved areas” in addition to primary care. This language is consistent with the funding passed this year by the General Assembly for extra residency slots in Virginia. Should funding for become available in the future, this modification would strengthen the program.

The Medical Society of Virginia appreciates the opportunity to submit comments. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
