Transgender children are one of the most vulnerable populations of people in this country, and in the world. I only recently graduated high school, and recently saw and experienced the detrimental effects an unsupportive school environment can have on trans youth. Any and all protections (including using their preferred names and pronouns at all times, allowing them to use the bathrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender identity, and ensuring protection against bullying) for them should absolutely be put in place immediately. It is ridiculous to believe that transgender children being able to out and safe within their own schools poses harm to cisgender children. Quite the opposite is true- without concrete protections, transgender children are at risk of bullying and violence from their cisgender peers, as well as from teachers, administration, and other faculty and staff. Anyone feeling threatened by this bill may believe they have the best interest of schoolchildren at heart, but the protection of ALL children, including trans children, is essential for fostering a safe and supportive school environment that is conducive to learning and community building.
