Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

Let's go with science and reality, not with your fantasy

We are often told by some scientists and politicians that the gold standard for the formulation of public policy should be science.  Then, more and more, those same people go ahead and make public policy based on whatever they want to impose on the rest of us.  The most obvious example of this is denial by those who promoted and now defend legal abortion of the undeniable scientific fact that immediately upon conception a baby's DNA is a combination of its mother's and father's DNAs, and thus the baby is a new and unique human being, a person.

In the same manner, the proposed Guidance Document ignores the science that whether a child is male or female is manifested not just in the child's external sexual characteristics, as has been obvious since the species began, but, as science has now determined, in the different composition of every cell of a person's body, depending on whether that person is male or female.  So a person with a male body who thinks that he is a female, or with a female body who thinks that she is a male, has thinking that is not in conformance with scientific reality.

Where scientific reality and thinking differ, to go with the thinking instead of the reality is to enter into a fantasy world.  The Guidance Document aims to lay down rules that would require all of us to participate in their fantasy, even though, for nearly all of us, our thinking conforms with the science, with reality.  They want to make their fantasy our new 'reality', an impossible task, because it is not science, and an effort that is doomed to end badly, most especially for those poor souls who have the reality/thinking problem in the first place.

To those who developed or are pushing for approval of the Guidance Document, I can ask no better question than to quote from a movie comedy, The Dream Team, "Why don't you accept reality as it is, rather than make it up as you go along?"

Enough!
