Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

Strongly Support

I provide my strongest support for this policy.

To community members who claim that this policy will allow for students to change their gender identity at will so that they can go into the girls bathroom/locker room and watch them undress or rape them - you are the same people who post about parental rights and your responsibility to teach your children. You can (and should) teach them that falsely changing their pronouns, taking advantage of a policy meant to help others, spying on women and raping women are WRONG. Why is it the responsibility of transgender individuals to remove this supposed "temptation" instead of the responsibility of these children who are actually committing inappropriate acts? This is a form of victim blaming.

And to those who worry that teachers have enough on their plate without having to remember their students' pronouns: is it really that difficult? If a student's last name changes because their parent remarries, teachers can handle that change. If a student's favorite color changes, teachers can learn the new one. If their handwriting evolves or they begin an after-school activity that alters their schedule or they develop a passion for a new subject - their teachers can and do respond to these changes. Modifying pronoun use to respect a person's identity is a miniscule responsibility. Sure, it can be difficult to remember at first - any change is. But with repetition and care, I have full confidence that teachers can learn this change.

LGBTQ+ individuals should not be punished so that those around them can avoid temporary (and self-proclaimed) "inconvenience" or "discomfort".
