Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

Dear Virginia Commonwealth Representatives and Lawmakers,

I am a proud Aunt of nine children, all of whom are under the age of 11 and reside in Northern Virginia. My two sisters are raising these beloved little ones and I couldn't be more proud. As I watch them grow and seek to nurture them to their full potential, I look into the future and have high hopes for each one of them.

There is one barrier to my hope, however and that is the laws you are seeking to pass that I know and believe will only cause children insurmountable grief, confusion and anxiety. It is clear from the beginning of time that each of us are created either Male or Female. There is no in between. I do not understand how/why you would seek to confuse our children and young people to think or believe otherwise.

I strongly urge you NOT TO PASS this law and impose such grief to children and families.
