I am very firmly against allowing DAII to scale subgingivally. Many people say that "This change does nothing to detract from the role of the hygienist..." and i disagree.
I feel that this proposed change benefits only the profit margin of the practices or what is convenient for many dentists (although I am happy to note that from some of these comments, many dentists realize what a slippery slope this proposal is starting down..
I think the focus should be on providing the best possible care for the patient and can anybody honestly say that a registered dental hygienist is not the best choice? Our extensive training has been primarily to encompass subgingival scaling as a large part of the of the patient's whole body health
If a dental assistant feels such a strong calling to provide excellent patient care and have expanded duties, then let them go back to school, and become a hygienist like so many of us did.
