I have lived in Oxford house Pembroke for over two years and believe in the current model. We are self-governing and we hold positions such as treasurer, secretary and president to keep the bills paid and things running smoothly. We pay for everything we need and provide a place for someone new to recovery whom is still in need a place to get back on their feet and to be supported on that journey.
I came to Oxford after my third stint in rehab. I would leave each time and go back to living on my own with no witnesses to my relapse, so I relapsed. I would be dead if I hadn't found this place where the women understand things about you and your recovery that family and friends never could. I was no longer alone. I was employed quickly and have been promoted since then. I have been going to therapy to address the issues that led me to self-medicate. And I now have the proper medication to address mental health issues. I know that if I relapse then I will no longer have a place here. I know that my housemates will hold me accountable for any negative behaviors that I display and I will do the same for them. I am almost ready to move on and my experience here has given me the confidence to succeed. Please don't take that away from the people that have no alternative.
