Oxford House

As an Oxford House Virginia Alumni, I am asking lawmakers to please consider the impact these proposed rules could have on Oxford Houses and the people they serve.

I lived in several Oxford Houses in the Roanoke, Christiansburg, and Radford areas. Oxford Houses are democratically self-governing and self-supporting, with the members themselves responsible for their homes and recovery.

Oxford House gave me the foundation, support, and accountability I needed to build a life I never thought was possible. After more than 8 years in Oxford House, I am now approaching 12 years sober. Today, I have my own home, I’m married, my daughter and family are in my life, and I have a career and a life I am incredibly grateful for. Oxford House didn’t just help me get sober—it gave me purpose, and now I have the privilege of helping others find the same hope.

I support reasonable rules that keep people safe. However, requirements that assume every recovery home is a staffed or commercial operation could fundamentally change the Oxford House model and make it difficult for Oxford Houses to operate in Virginia.

Please preserve the self-governing, self-supporting nature of Oxford House and clearly clarify whether house members are considered the “operator” of the home.

I am living proof of what this model can make possible. Please protect the opportunity for others to experience the same.
