I am writing to formally voice my opposition to the proposal that would allow dental assistants in Virginia to perform dental scaling without an Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) license.

Dental scaling is a complex clinical procedure, not a simple mechanical task. It demands a deep understanding of periodontal health, anatomy, pathology, and infection control—expertise gained through the rigorous, accredited education and board examinations required for RDH licensure.

There is a critical difference between dental assisting and the clinical practice of dental hygiene. Allowing unlicensed individuals to perform scaling threatens the standard of care and compromises patient safety. Beyond the physical removal of deposits, scaling requires the clinical judgment to recognize disease, assess complex needs, and determine when a referral is necessary.

Furthermore, bypassing these educational requirements undermines the professional standards that protect the public. By maintaining the current scope of practice, Virginia ensures that patients receive care from qualified, rigorously trained professionals. I urge the Commonwealth to uphold these essential standards to prioritize patient safety and the integrity of dental care.
