This whole legislature is condoning neglect. Patients will absolutely suffer. I guarantee there will be a rise in periodontal disease due to neglect that is being ALLOWED. Literally everyone needs SUBgingival scaling, which assistants CANNOT do and SHOULD not do. Heck, even half the dentists cannot do a thorough cleaning. Hygienists are educated, not only on "scaling", but overall health, diseases, medications, etc. A dentist that is ridiculously busy is NOT going to have time to PROPERLY train their assistant. The answer to the hygiene shortage is better work place environments, funding for dental hygiene programs, making insurance ACCOUNTABLE for how little they reimburse while their company makes MILLIONS. Let's say a prophy patient comes in, gets Supra scaling twice, then all of a sudden there is an area with a subgingival piece of calculus that has been left alone for the last year and now that pocket is a 5mm and bone loss due to improper removal of bacteria. Who is held accountable for this negelct?? Now the patient is periodontally involved, has to pay for periodontal therapy, then will be considered a periodontal patient for life due to bone loss at the hands of their own dentist. This is literally the worst solution anyone could have come to. I am truly disgusted and saddened to see what the Healthcare industry is becoming.
