Putting a price on excess carbon is one of the most logical ways to reduce the impacts of climate change. It allows our economy to more gradually respond to climate change by putting a price on a pollutant that is currently emitted for free, incentivizing its reduction and creating a funding source for desperately needed adaptations to protect Virginians.
This excess carbon is already costing our economy through extreme weather events, sea-level rise, increased disease, and migration from these issues, and we are charging nothing for the release of it.
