General Information
Action Summary The department, under the direction of the board, establishes the compulsory minimum training standards for full-time and part-time law enforcement officers in Virginia. As such, an individual hired as a law enforcement officer (as defined in ยง 9.1-101 of the Code of Virginia) shall comply with and meet or exceed, the law enforcement certification requirements enumerated in 6 VAC 20-20-21. Through this action, these minimum training standards will be amended to improve performance outcomes, training objectives, testing criteria, and lesson plan guides. Outdated language will also be updated for effectiveness and efficiency in the training of new academy recruits. Additionally, 6VAC20-20-40 will be amended to extend the time requirement to complete this training. This regulatory action will enhance both officer and public safety in the Commonwealth of Virginia and ensure effective and efficient training for new law enforcement officers.
