Description of Proposed Guidance Document Changes
The Diabetes Management in Schools: Manual for Unlicensed Personnel updates the guidelines on management of the student with diabetes, as delineated in the Manual for Training Public School Employees in the Administration of Insulin and Glucagon, first developed in 2009 and last revised in 2015. The updated Diabetes Management in Schools manual reflects changes in research and technology regarding the management of a student with diabetes in the school setting. It is no longer limited to use of insulin and glucagon; rather, it has become a complete document of comprehensive care coordination by school staff for the student with diabetes within the educational setting. This document is a major revision and reflects numerous changes in state law as well as current research on best practices in diabetes management for school aged children.
