The course that is being purposed for Basis Entry Shotgun is an Advance Shotgun course. It should be added as such with a requirement for basic entry shotgun bring taken prior to eligibility to take it. This purposed course would be applicable for security officers working high risk areas that may have the potential of encoutering situations that would require this type skill of carrying the shotgun on a slang and converting to handgun and vise-versa. It is not realistic or necessary for the entry level shotgun training. Most security officers who are carrying shotguns do not require this skill as they will not be in a position to carry a shotgun with the slang on their assigned sites.
Shotguns carried on the streets are viewed by the public as a show of force and often times unnecessary use of force. It is considered offensive and that is why public law enforcement agencies do not allow the shotgun to be carried where it can be seen by their personnel. Shotguns are only allowed to be taken out of the trunks in an emergency situation unless the officer is a part of a tactical team and it is deemed necessary to have a shotgun.
The basic shotgun course should be a two hour course. It should be changed to require 10 rds. of slugs be fired; 5 shot from the 15 yd. line and 5 from the 25 yd. line. Combat loading 1 rd. and tube loading 4 rds. at each location. Then, 3 rds. should be shot from the standing position and 2 rds. shot from the kneeling position in 25 sec. with a minimum of 8 hits on the target to pass. It is easier to score this target and requires more competency for accuracy than buckshot.
