Virginians deserve better than politically motivated regulations that place onerous restrictions on women and their autonomy over their own bodies. As a public health professional, I share a commitment to ensuring patient health and safety; however, these sham restrictions do not do this. Politicians, not doctors, are pushing sham restrictions to cut off women’s ability to access comprehensive reproductive health care services. Leading medical experts and organizations oppose these restrictions. These regulations do not to advance patient health and safety, but instead are aimed to shut down safe, high-quality women’s health care centers. Closing safe, high-quality health care clinics in our communities will not end the need for abortion, but will force women to take matters into their own hands or into the hands of sub-standard providers. These restrictions must be amended to better protect patient health, safety, and confidentiality and ensure access to safe medical care. Regulations should be based on evidence-based science and medicine—not politics.
