These regulations will cause most of the women's health care centers available to low income women throughout the state of Virginia to close and put more obstacles and stress in the way of their reproductive health care decisions.
Over-regulation of women's health centers, which is what the new rules do, limits access to a wide range of preventive reproductive health care including life-saving cancer screenings, family planning and sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment. These services form the core of the services provided by the targeted women's health centers. These centers have been shown to provide a high standard of care with an impressive safety record for all their services, including abortion. Data show that abortion is one of the safest medical procedures.
Any amendments to present regulations should be be based solely on medicine and science and should not impede women's access to essential health care.
