Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

Oppose SEL

NO , NO, NO. While it is desirable to consider the needs of the whole child and encourage kindness, and give special aid to those who need it,  I think this SEL program contains language that seems very biased. Also depending on how it is implemented and the political views of the teacher it seems subject to politically driven ideology. Though we want all to succeed, the  idea “equality of outcomes” is not in keeping with the concept of reward for hard work, and with a thorough understanding of the value of diverse talents, possibly even prohibiting  some from reaching their potential , and this language may also create an unfortunate opportunity for litigation . A lot of work seems to be done on this but i think it is not the best way to help, and it feels like a lot to put on our teachers and sends them in the wrong direction  . We want all to succeed and to be inspired toward a lifetime of learning and achievement; THIS WILL NOT DO.
