Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

Scared for our children and disappointed in the proposal. After careful consideration I am opposed.

This is clearly not a good way to approach social and emotional development in our school systems.  I have read through the SEL standards, and many of the comments found here, positive and negative.  The comments in favor of SEL seem to just repeat that its good for kids and that there is a lot of research that aligns with state goals?  The comments in opposition of SEL, that are well written and aren't just slamming things, make incredibly valid points.  It is true; language and ideas contained in the SEL standards are not ok for our kids.  There are significant flaws, from dictating what values a child will have instead of letting the family instill their beliefs, to divisive and inflammatory language, to expectations that are not developmentally appropriate and the expectations placed on children for which they will be assessed, to the inappropriate expectations placed on teachers to implement some they are not qualified to do or have time in their day for.  After looking into pros and cons, and reading the document for myself I am disappointed and against SEL in the public schools.
