I have been a mental health practitioner in the field for more than two decades, providing services to youth k-12, in public school and private settings.  The standards being recommended are not able to be reasonably implemented with validity or fidelity.  Class wide discussions on group affiliation and all of the aspects/ differences that go along with this is unethical.  Teachers do not have the credentialing to address emotional/ mental health, sexual orientation/ LGBTQ issues, religious issues, abuse issues, or any other potentially difficult or traumatic topic that will without question arise from delving into a child's belief system, back ground, and group affiliation.  Often students will not fully have developed their identification to a "group" or may be in question.  It is unethical and potentially damaging for teachers to then be tasked with exploring these avenues with their students, and helping them to "learn" where they fit in and what values system this entails.  SEL as part of curriculum will inevitably result schools and the Virginia Department of Education engaging in litigation.  After thoroughly considering the SEL standards, I am able to say without question, that this is not reasonable, ethical, or appropriate for public schools.
