Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

Careful

While it is important to help children identify feelings/emotions and to normalize any emotions outside of simply being happy, vdoe needs to be careful with whom they are entrusting our children’s social and emotional learning to. Schools are already short staffed with mental health providers and now another mental health initiative is being dumped on the school. School counselors have for years lead to campaign to introduce these concepts in a safe and developmental way, but now we are asking teachers to tackle these sensitive topics? When? How? Where? I fear that teachers will not have the tools necessary to moderate discussions around some of these very politically charged topics which appear to begin to be introduced as early as later elementary school.
