Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

Frustrated Parent

These SEL standards are abuse of the public education system and tax payer’s money, used for political purposes. Public school is not the place to teach controversial and ideologically driven opinions on morality. It is the choice and responsibility of the parent to teach what is right and wrong in these circumstances.

The SEL is written in a way that sounds good to people not paying attention. But it is really just Critical Race Theory with a different name. And what is teaches is Anti-Racism. Which is just RACISM with a different name. It encourages re-segregation, and puts guilt and shame on all different groups of people. So much for diversity. This shines a light on people’s differences and ostracizes them for it.

SEL is not welcome in our schools.
