Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

Social Emotional Learning will not support your family

Education needs to focus on what is required to live a successful, fulfilling life.  It is not the responsibility of educators or leaders to socially educate our children.  Your one and only job is to teach our children academics.  What the administration and the teachers association are saying to parents is "we don't trust you to be a parent", the facts are you have been hired to do a job and if you are not doing your job then you need to be replaced and since the parents are paying your salary we should have the final say in your continued employment.   Every teacher has his or her own area of expertise and we need you to focus on what you specialized in and stop trying to be a one-stop shop.  If our children need a psychologist, we will take them to one, the same goes for all the other rolls that the VDOE insists on teachers assuming with our children.  DO YOUR TEACHING JOB, THATS WHAT YOU WENT TO SCHOOL FOR ; REMEMBER!
