Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

SEL is wildly inappropriate!

I've never been more relieved I started homeschooling my children this year.  The curriculum we follow is rigorous, they have an active role in their home (time for chores, yard work, cooking and time management), quality socialization (no masks) with their co-op group and extra time for their sports.

There are definitely difficult emotions at times, and I see their frustration first hand when they struggle through new concepts or have conflicts with peers at co-op.  The relief I now feel is seeing that no random adult in the public school system is harassing my child with surveys and questions about their emotions.

I've extensively read through these SEL standards as well as Panorama Education curriculum, which I believe VDOE based their standards off of.  Buckle up, this will further divide society.  Any concerned parent, remember you are the parent.  Please take a close look at the messages interlaced in these standards.  Public school teachers, I would prepare for backlash as these standards also pit kids agains teachers.  It is wildly inappropriate for teachers and unqualified school counselors (who are not properly trained in mental health) to be probing kids with these questions, then rating them and keeping files on how kids answer their personal feelings.

SEL is further confirming to any perceptive parent that public (government) schools are WAY OUT OF LINE.
