I strongly support this proposal to implement newborn screening for SMA.  Screening is imperative to identify the children who will benefit from critical treatment for this serious and deadly condition. I have witnessed a family lose their precious infant because they were unaware that he was born with this genetic condition.  Newborn screening will give infants in Virginia the access to care they need to have a chance at life.  Additionally, this proposal will bring Virginia in line with federal recommendations for screening and the practices of the majority of states that already require this screening for SMA.
