Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

No to SEL. This is racism. w explanation

Teaching students that an entire race or group is a certain way is racist by definition. Teaching students that an entire race or group will have advantages or disadvantages based solely on their identification in that race or group is racist by definition. Individual needs must be served regardless. And those who are disadvantaged must be served by need and not based on a blanket group statement. That is racism. The aspects about emotional support, teaching resilience, awareness of others and our own feelings, acceptance of differences, and being able to hear and listen as well as express ones own ideas appropriately is excellent. But, not Social Awareness, and the further division of our country through this political agenda.
