More than two decades of research demonstrates that education promoting social and emotional learning (SEL) brings about positive results in student achievement, mental and physical health,  classroom management, reduction of poverty and the prevention of youth problem behaviors.  By teaching the core skills of self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness we equip our students with life skills that help them to be successful in the classroom and to contribute positively to our communities.  Teaching kids to take care of themselves and to look out for one another is not new, offensive, or dangerous.  When kids are able to identify and manage their emotions and take responsibility for the ways in which they impact those around them, our school communities become safe and exciting environments in which learning can take place.  With student mental health issues on the rise, now is not the time to cut back on this essential component to our education programming.  YES to SEL.
