SEL Standards in our schools

First I am very surprised to only be seeing and hearing about this now with all the the VDOE has done to get to this point.  Why wouldn't you make certain that ALL schools and ALL parents were aware of what was being considered? Public notices or links to this info on each county's public school website is needed.  While on the surface the  program might seem to be a good thing, it is very concerning.  I would hope that ALL parents and guardians will be able to read all the proposed lessons per grade level to understand what the VDOE proposes.

This program is overstepping the purpose of public schools.  Our schools need to provide education in math, science, language arts and history.  Providing these lessons in an accurate and age appropriate format along with adaptations based on individual student's requirements is what is needed.  Yes, there are rules in school as to behavior and interaction with teachers and other students.  This is only to insure the safety of everyone and to ensure all students have the opportunity to learn.  This can also demonstrate how to treat everyone 'equally' or 'as we would like to be treated' or more simply, with respect.   Do not take on the parent or guardian's duties to teach children how to 'identify' themselves or how to protest unfair treatment of this or that group that they are 'identified' with.  It is appropriate to have discussion in health about a healthy self-image and that there are counselors available when needed.  Parents and guardians could also be given information and encouragement to reach out for help if needed.  However, this SEL program should never be in place as a requirement for all students.   At most, it should only be an option for those parents or guardians who would choose to use it.   This program may only cause more division among students.  Helping them become aware of the need for unity and learning how to work together; that is what is going to help them continue their education and continue into the work force and/or family life as an adult and make good decisions for themselves and their families.  Focus on teaching history as accurately as possible by sharing different points of view and on civics to explain each citizen's responsibility to elect those lawmakers that share similar values.

Focus on academics, not parenting!
