Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

Social Emotional Learning Standards - VDOE

The document I was shown stated that these SEL standards would be "centered in equity" (p. 5).

I don't have the space in only 3000 words to go through thoroughly why I'm opposed to all or nearly all of it; but I'll get as far as I can.

  1. Adherents to the ideology of equity appear to demonstrate all eight of psychiatrist Dr. Robert Lifton's criteria for thought reform, from Chapter 22 of his famous work, Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism: A Study of "Brainwashing" in China (1961). Thought reform is socio-psychological abuse. It most certainly does not belong in a public school.
  2. Adherents to the ideology of equity appear to demonstrate all four aspects of Steven Hassan's BITE Model of cultish thinking / extremism.
  3. Because all of the SEL standards will be evaluated in light of "equity", SeA1 and SeM1 would constitute child abuse; SoA2 might constitute child abuse; ReS1, ReS2, DeM1 and DeM2 probably would as well.

Additional thoughts on particular standards:

SeA1: Recognize and understand the interaction between one’s own thoughts and emotions. (Critical Thinking)

When judged by the lens of equity, this standard is discriminatory and emotionally abusive against white Conservative students.

This reflection can lead to socio-psychological problems for students who reflect regularly, particularly in an equity-minded context. So, we're talking high risk of child abuse; high potential for discrimination and invasion of privacy; and the standard would likely add greater strain to relations among different groups (increased racial tension, lack of graciousness or forgiveness, sense of entitlement, perpetual victimhood, etc.).

In an equity context, this standard would be antithetical to critical thinking, due to the lack of toleration for diversity of thought.

SeA2: Develop a positive identity and recognize personal strengths, interests, values, and challenges. (Creative Thinking)

White Conservative students cannot develop a positive identity in a public school setting that values equity, because equity ideology does not value white people and conflicts with Conservative cultural values.

Also, this has nothing to do with creative thinking.

SeM1: Develop and demonstrate strategies for managing and expressing one's own emotions to persevere in challenging situations. (Communication)

This standard is based on the false and abusive assumption that “managing” one’s emotions and “persevering in challenging situations” are always appropriate behaviors. Seeking to “manage” one’s emotions and “persevering in challenging situations” are abusive demands when the environment is hostile or abusive to the individual. Case in point: a spouse being abused.

In the public school context, the school environment frequently becomes abusive or hostile toward white Conservatives – most notably students – when a school system embraces equity ideology and forces Conservatives to participate against their will. This leads to a breakdown in trust and communication from white Conservative students. This is not a "microaggression" issue. It is a survival mechanism against school-inflicted child abuse.

SeM2: Demonstrate the skills related to achieving personal and academic goals. (Creative Thinking)

And what skills will those be? How will this be assessed? I guess you could say that I'm skeptical.

Also, will white Conservative students be discriminated against here, too? Because, um, this is a pretty important aspect - although I bet parents could offer better support, anyway.

Not sure how the goal achievement and creative thinking work together. Clarification would have been nice.

SoA1: Demonstrate the ability to empathize with and show gratitude for others, including those with different and diverse perspectives, backgrounds and cultures. (Collaboration)

American equity-minded public schools have seldom, if ever, in my nearly 40 years of life, demonstrated genuine empathy and gratitude for white Conservatives. In the vast majority of cases, there has never been legitimate collaboration with everyone, nor will there be, so long as Conservatives are in reality excluded.

To require white Conservative students to value others when they themselves have not been valued, is discriminatory and abusive.

SoA2: Demonstrate the ability to understand broader historical and social contexts’ impact on humanity. (Citizenship)

More abuse and discrimination against white Conservative students. Given the equity lens, teachers will focus on subjects that are much more likely to vilify whites - and by extension, Conservatives. Meanwhile, issues related to Conservatives - human rights violations in the former Soviet Union (Gulag system; fake mental health diagnoses of political dissidents) and the PRC (Cultural Revolution; Tank Man and the Tienanmen Square Massacre); suppression of Conservative speech by American tech companies; supporting rural American and "Rust Belt" communities - will likely continue to receive limited coverage...

Also, focusing on the historical context may place additional strain on student relationships between members from different groups.

ReS1: Apply positive verbal and non-verbal communication and listening skills to interact with others, form and maintain positive relationships, and resolve conflict constructively. (Communication)

Especially given the equity lens, this will result in more discrimination against white Conservatives. White Conservatives generally value telling it how it is and are not typically affectionate with random people. They prefer to conserve their energy for their close friends and family members, because they recognize that they'd burn out trying to be friends with everyone.

Speaking of friends, NONE of these standards address healthy boundaries. THAT IS SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS!

As for "resolving conflict constructively", that is a tall order for white Conservatives, because Americans tend to be easily-offended by white Conservative culture.

Good grief, it's like you're setting up white Conservative students for discrimination or failure. Disgusting!

ReS2: Demonstrate the ability to effectively collaborate and navigate relationships while valuing different and diverse perspectives, backgrounds and cultures. (Collaboration)

More anti-white Conservative discrimination - and stop spreading the bald-faced lie about valuing diverse perspectives! STOP LYING TO US!!!!! White Conservative students have been rejected and facing discrimination in the public school system for at least about the last 30 years, even though they offer some of the best ideological diversity! White Conservatives have no reason to collaborate with people who hate them or don't value them.

Stop promoting child abuse and discrimination! Get rid of the cult of equity and these highly abusive and discriminatory standards! They're garbage!

You're making an excellent case for white Conservative parents to pull their kids out of the public schools. You're also making an excellent case for school vouchers and homeschooling, so thank you for that!
