Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

Thank you for making this a priority!

As a parent and educator, I am so grateful that I live in a state that is prioritizing social-emotional learning. I recognize that these skills are important for all of our kids to be successful both in the classroom and in life, so I appreciate VDOE making this a priority. This is an opportunity for us to see the way social-emotional learning can support the 5 Cs of the Profile of a Virginia Graduate as well as the 5 Cs of Ed/Equity VA. It is extremely difficult for our kids to be successful in and outside of the classroom if they aren't able to understand and manage their emotions, communicate effectively, understand the perspectives of others, work collaboratively in a group, and effectively problem solve. I very much appreciate your acknowledgement of that as well as your action to support that skill development. I'm feeling grateful to be a parent and educator in this state! Thank you!
