Please Pass The Poultry Litter Regulation

Re:  Proposed regulation to require all significant poultry waste end users and poultry brokers to test soul and to prevent the accumulation of phosphorous…

As a person who regularly fishes the Rappahannock and Shenandoah Rivers, and occasionally the Potomac River, who regularly drinks water in Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties, I care about the quality of the water in Virginia’s wonderful natural resources.

I am of a mind to think that the proposed regulations are long over-due.  The significant amount of poultry waste generated in the Commonwealth is cause for concern.  The massive fish kills in the Shenandoah in the recent past should remind us that our rivers are, in fact, vulnerable, should not be taken for granted, and deserve our careful attention.  We ought not to be short-sighted in tending to these issues.

Please enact regulations that will protect our rivers by requiring soil testing on lands that will be receiving poultry waste…and by requiring that poultry waste NOT be applied near the river banks (an appropriate set-back); also appropriate methods for storing the waste should be developed and required to prevent the accidental discharge of stored waste products into our rivers.

Thank you for considering these comments.
