Strong Support for Professional Wetland Delineator Certification

I am a relatively new holder of the Professional Wetland Delineator (PWD) certification, but as someone active in delineation, I am thankful that the program exists. It's established the base line level of competency and code of conduct required from wetland delineations performed for private/public sector within federal and Virginia guidelines. The technical component of the PWD is not replicated by the Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification, and they should not be considered duplicative. The PWS minimum education requirement, which not all PWD holders meet, does not require wetland delineation coursework or field practical to be satisfied. The delineation competency assured through the PWD certification program can only be acquired through in depth knowledge of the jurisdictional guidelines and technical criteria (hydrology, soils, vegetation), as well as practical field experience. Delineations performed by unqualified/untrained individuals can result in permitting issues and potential lawsuits. I am in strong support for the program and urge it is continued to uphold the technical standards, knowledge of jurisdiction guidelines, and professional conduct inherent to the practice of delineation. Thank you for your consideration.
