STRONGLY SUPPORT Continued Licensing of Professional Soil Scientists

Appropriately educated, trained, and experienced Soil Scientists are relied upon to provide detailed, site specific evaluations of properties for a wide range of projects such as erosion and sediment control, construction suitability (shrink swell for example), land application of treated wastewater, land application of biosolids, and onsite wastewater disposal systems.  The current licensure program ensures that properly educated and trained persons can be identified and engaged to conduct this work.  Without a licensing program, an owner or consultant cannot know if a person is truly a professional, skilled individual.  The monetary ramifications to an owner will be extensive when waste disposal is compromised and groundwater and surface waters are contaminated by a poor soil call.  Soils are not something one picks up overnight.  It takes years of study and years of experience and continued learning to be a professional.  Please do not put our Commonwealth at risk by allowing non-qualified individuals to do this work.
