I write in favor of retaining professional certifications for interior designers, landscape architects, soil scientists, and wetland delineators. These are important credentials that distinguish these professionals as trained and experienced practitioners. Clients requiring these services seek out practitioners with these specific credentials. Other important reasons for continuing to make these certifications are that the unregulated practice of these occupations can potentially harm public health, safety or welfare; the work of these occupations have inherent qualities that distinguish the from other occupations; and that the public needs, and will benefit from, state assurances of competency.
