Oversight and regulation are strongly needed in this area. The abuse seen in Central Virgina and possibly other areas is appauling and will traumatize these children for years to come. As a mental Health Nurse I can say this with knowledge and understanding. If any "restraint" needs to be used it needs to be documented to the level that hospitals do and it should only be done in extreme situations such as when someone could get hurt. Staff should be required to be trained and checked off annually and required to only use approved techniques. I reccomend something similar to the "Mandt" system for school systems that's used at the Fairfax County CSB. I understand this could be costly. But leaving staff and schools to do as they will is dangerous for our children. This keeps people off the floor when being restrained. As a mother of a developmentally delayed child it really worries me. Actually down-right scares me that teachers and aides would treat children intrusted to their care this way. We need to protect our children from those that have chosen the wrong field of work. Thank you for your time and for taking up this important issue.
