Racing Commission Regulations

Local control and input is the main reason I write to you today with regard to the betting/slot machines you are considering putting throughout Virginia.  Make no mistake about it, these machines are not what we voted for in years past. I do believe most voters would support this initiative, but when educated on the issue I think you will have a revolt on your hands that you allowed 3,000 machines in the Commonwealth.  Kentucky has half that amount, so why would we exceed that.  We are getting a little greedy here and not allowing local governments to weigh in?  This is not giving a voice to the citizens who live in those communities.  And now, Colonial Downs wants to put a larger facility in one of the most economically challenged areas hoping for what?  That the poor stay poorer?  I can’t imagine that area will be a draw for anyone since OTB’s in the past have not been managed well and were quite frankly a little scary to visit.  So please take into account the overall need to what is right for all Virginians.

Sincerely,

Payton Mallonee
