Let voters decide

Dear Racing Commission of Virginia,

I heard on the news that a public hearing was held today on regulations to slot machines in Virginia. I was surprised that this public hearing wasn't widely announced since I believe it will have an impact statewide and the general public—not those just in the horse industry or those with financial interests in Colonial Downs—should have had a real opportunity to share their thoughts. After learning a little bit more from what was available online, I hope you will take into account that many people like myself have moved here and never voted for this type of activity in Richmond. I am generally supportive of the concept of gambling, but I do believe you should allow local governments interested in these betting parlors to decide once again—or better yet, leave it up to the voters. The last time this concept was voted on was in the late 90’s, and these machines and sites are far different than was supported in the past. How do these machines even work, and who really benefits? I hope it’s the horse industry, but I have a feeling they will still be in the same dire situation years from now. I do believe referendums around the state would pass overwhelmingly, so you shouldn’t be concerned—but it is the right course of action to take. Please let Virginia voters decide. My best to you all as you work through these issues. Thank you for listening to my concerns.
