Limit the number of machines!

Dear Virginia Racing Commission:

As someone with family in "horse country" in Kentucky and a long-time Virginia resident, I am very excited that Colonial Downs track will reopen next year for the Virginia Derby.  It surely has been a long past four years without quality thoroughbred horse racing in Virginia because I am a true fan of the energy on race day.  That being said, I am a bit worried about the current regulations for some of the off-track betting parlors and historical horse racing.  While I understand the potential profit for the state, I hope that you will take my concerns to heart.

I noticed that your recently published draft regulations allows for 3,000 machines to be placed throughout the Commonwealth.  This is far too many machines and could result in dangerous consequences.  An OTB would even be allowed to add a limited number of machines, even if the local government does not give them approval.  We should allow the localities to have a voice in this process rather than ignoring them because their involvement is paramount.  I am sure that you make the right decision and thank you for taking the time to read my comments.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Dougherty Kane
