Pari Mutel Betting - Referenda

I encourage you to share with the Virginia Racing Commission members my concerns about the recent proposed regulations on historical racing machines in Virginia.  I have been around the horse industry all my life, and have enjoyed the passion my father had for running his award winning horses.   As a family we have endured the highs and lows of working the family farm, and want nothing more than for the industry to continue to grow in Virginia.  We have had our share of winning and losing—but this is a critical time in Virginia for you all to ensure that Virginia Horsemen and women succeed.   In my opinion, the number of machines statewide is too high and there seems to be no control as to where these off-tracking betting parlors can be placed. How is it that we would have double the machines that Kentucky? That is just outright wrong.

If I recall, citizens had to approve by local referenda, the opening of these facilities. I believe that should happen again.  If that is not the route you decide, then allow a local government to decide where these facilities should be placed.  OTB’s should not be near schools, churches or neighborhoods.  OTB’s belong in locations with food and entertainment.   Please consider the actions you take could significantly impact

Sincerely,

Sandy Hundley
