Dry needling is another name for acupuncture. The limited amount of training PT's receive-- some only up to 54 hours with no clinical hours- is not enough training to allow Pt's to perform "dry needling". Even MD's have to have more than 300 hours of additional training in order to perform acupuncture on trigger points- and they are already licensed to use needles and do surgery. For PT's to think they have the correct training to perform this type of procedure is ridiculous and any legislation that allows them to do this will only serve to put the public at risk. If they feel their patient will benefit from "dry needling", they should refer out to a trained MD or an acupuncturist. Just like MD's and acupuncturist's refer patients to PT's.
